Flute workshop with Tiernan Courell

Tiernan Courell is an Irish flute and whistle player, originally from Sligo but now based in Glasgow. Tiernan graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Glasgow, and is a member of TRIP, as well as having a thriving solo career. Since the release of his EP, ‘How’s About Now?’, he has continued writing music of his own, and has become a sought-after workshop tutor.
Tiernan will be hosting our flute workshop on Saturday 4th October at 10am, in the Duke of Rothesay Highland Games Pavilion. This workshop is aimed at intermediate-level players, and will be focusing on learning a handful of tunes and experimenting with ornamentation. Each attendee must bring their own instrument to this workshop.
Accordion workshop with
Michael Biggins

About Michael
Michael Biggins is a talented multi-instrumentalist hailing from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, but now living in Glasgow. This isn’t Michael’s first appearance at Braemar Folk Festival, he was here last year with headliner, the Ross Couper Band, and we are thoroughly excited to be welcoming him back to perform with TRIP at our Friday Night Concert this year.
Michael will be hosting an accordion workshop on Saturday 4th October, at 10am in the Duke of Rothesay Highland Games Pavilion, just a short walk from St. Margaret’s. In this workshop, Michael will be teaching a few advanced tunes, diving into their more complex harmonies. This workshop is aimed at intermediate to advanced accordion players, each attendee must bring their own instrument.
Bodhran workshop with Craig Baxter

About Craig
Craig Baxter is a bodhran and snare drum player, originally from Clackmannanshire in central Scotland. He started out in the pipe band world, playing snare drum with the Royal Burgh of Stirling, Fife Police, and the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland. Craig now plays bodhran with TRIP and Gnoss, and has also performed and recorded with other artists including Karen Matheson, Donald Shaw and Project Smok.
Craig will be hosting our bodhran workshop on Saturday 4th October, at 10am in the Duke of Rothesay Highland Games Pavilion. This will be a workshop aimed at beginners, covering beginner technique and basic patterns and rhythms. All attendees must bring their own instrument.

Alasdair MacKenzie

About Alasdair
Alasdair MacKenzie is a guitarist and singer, who grew up surrounded by the rich traditional music of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. He attended the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton High School, near the Isle of Skye, and has since become a prominent musician amongst the folk scene in Glasgow.
Alasdair will be leading our guitar workshop on Saturday 4th October at 10am, in the Duke of Rothesay Highland Games Pavilion. This workshop will be aimed at beginners to intermediate-level players, focusing on basic accompaniment styles and an introduction to flat picking. All attendees must bring their own instruments.
